New County Commissioner Elected

Bill Smith, County Commissioner for District 2, Newport, resigned due to health problems. The resignation took effect on Monday February 1st.

Mr. Smith served the residents of Carteret County and District 2 since 2010. Commissioner Comer presented Mr. Smith a plaque to recognize his service. Chairman Ed Wheatly stated in the release, "We will certainly miss Commissioner Smith sharing a seat among us as we work for the betterment of Carteret County. We thank him for his dedication and loyalty. Most notably, we thank Commissioner Smith for his leadership as the 2020 Chairman during the current COVID-19 pandemic."

 

 

During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Carteret County Republican Executive Committee, Chairman Pat Joyce called for nominations to fill the seat of County Commissioner District 2. One nomination, for Charles "Chuck" Shinn, of Newport, was made. Mr. Shinn is currently the Mayor Pro Tempore and Councilman for Newport, and sits on the County Planning Board. Chuck will be sworn in at the next County Commissioners meeting, scheduled for Monday, February 15th at 6pm.
